There’s quit a buzz going on with the latest fiasco with breastfeeding moms displaying photos on Facebook.
In my opinion, if it’s in good taste and naturally it is when a mother is feeding a child in a natural way, and what breasts were meant to do in the first place. But Facebook doesn’t think these photos are suitable on their web site.
A group of women who spoke with CBS station KTVT-TV said they are outraged that they can’t share breastfeeding photos on their Facebook pages.
They are so outraged, in fact, that they are protesting Facebook online. The women are taking part in an activity called virtual “nurse in’s.”
The “nurse in’s” was organized by a group called Mothers International Lactation Campaign, which urged Facebook members to change their profile images to breastfeeding images on Dec. 27, 2008. It also planned in-person events that day.
Thousands of Facebook users participated, KTVT-TV reported. In addition, the Facebook group “Hey Facebook, breastfeeding is not obscene!” now has more than 90,000 members.
So will Facebook lift its ban on such photos? Who knows but some moms are leaving their photos on Facebook no matter what.
I support freedom of speech and freedom of breastfeeding photos on Facebook!
99.5% of the time I agree with you but this is an issue that I don’t.. 1st off, if you want to put it out there, yeah people are going to look at it. Some will agree some will not, I am an advocate for if you don’t like it, don’t look at it. There are a hell of a lot worse pictures than these.
But I feel this is a “bond” between you and your child – and it should respectively be kept there. There is something to be said about a little personal class – how is that child going to feel later in life if those surface?
Susie,
I understand what you are saying, but my argument is that these photos are not rude and if a person wants to share them they should be able to freely.
Wow-you are quick! I too understand your argument as well, again, if you don’t want to look, you just don’t go there. Everyone wants to expose everything, sometimes things are best left to the imagination!
Susie,
You are right if you don’t want to see it, don’t look at it period! :)
Frank< It doesn’t bother me at all! If you don’t like it don’t look! I hate censorship!
You and I both. Don’t like, don’t look.
Breastfeeding pictures are already easy to find all over the web. Take http://www.breastfeeding.com for one. You can see hundreds if not thousands of breastfeeding photos there-available to whomever may go there or stumble upon it. Breasts are designed to feed babies and if someone doesn’t see it on the internet they’re likely to see it in a National Geographic. From what I hear, FB has lots of very provocative pictures-breastfeeding your child is not.
Debbie,
Yes there are sites for parenting that display breastfeeding photos. This is why I think Facebook is overly censoring.
