Solving application errors on a Windows PC, such as exe errors is not rocket science. The only requirements are some knowledge and a few of the right software tools. With this article we aim to empower Windows users against ever-prevalent exe errors.
Here are the top 5 tips for resolving exe errors on your Windows computer.
Tip #1 – Perform a malware scan
Malware infection is often found to be the root cause behind the majority of application errors, including exe errors. Malicious programs are known to delete or alter the contents of application files, such as the rtvscan.exe file, causing an error every time the infected process runs. To fix exe errors, such as the rtvscan.exe error that are being caused by malware infection, run a malware scan on your entire computer using a robust protective software like Malwarebytes Anti-Malware.
Tip #2 – Update your software
Running outdated software is another common cause of exe errors. Besides causing frequent application errors, processes associated with outdated software may also consume inappropriate amounts of CPU resources and cause your system’s performance to drop considerably. For instance, if your ESET NOD 32 antivirus is out-of-date, then you may experience frequent ekrn.exe errors and face frequent system freeze ups due to the high CPU usage of the ekrn.exe process.
In addition to the software files, also keep Windows and driver files up-to-date. To ensure new Windows updates are automatically installed on your computer, simply keep the built-in Automatic Update feature enabled. The Automatic Update feature is an integral part of all Windows operating systems since Windows ME. If you use Windows 95 or 98, visit the Microsoft Update section and download any new available updates.
To update your third-party drivers, simply use a reliable driver update tool. Such tools periodically scan your drivers and install new updates as and when they are released by their manufacturers.
Tip #3 – Clean your registry
Entries related to your application files are stored in your registry. If this data gets deleted or becomes corrupt, your computer screen is likely to be flooded with a myriad of application errors. That is why it is necessary that you regularly clean your registry.
Install a reliable Windows registry cleaning program – these programs don’t cost an arm and leg and provide great value – and use them to regularly clean your registry and perform other registry maintenance tasks.
Tip #4 – Get rid of unnecessary applications
Get rid of programs that you no longer use.
Processes related to programs that you don’t use may continue to run in the background. Such processes eat into your system resources and may also conflict with other running processes, causing errors and other PC performance related issues.
To uninstall unwanted programs, open the Control Panel, click Add or Remove Programs, go through the list of installed programs, identify the unwanted programs/applications, select these programs one by one, and click the Remove button.
Tip #5 – Disable unnecessary startup processes
A number of processes start automatically when Windows loads. Some of these processes are necessary, while others, such as the mdm.exe process can be safely disabled.
Disabling unnecessary startup processes has two distinct advantages. It helps in speeding up the Windows boot process and prevents unnecessary errors such as ekrn.exe errors. To disable mdm.exe and other non-essential startup processes, simply run the msconfig command.
This is over my head and I am not sure how to find my registry.Once I can I am sure many of my problems will be under control. I can not download anything so I believe something in the registry is causing the problem.
I am aware many downloads that you have deleted have left something hanging in the registry.
Frank – you have helped me plenty – thank you
Now how do I find the registry???
Bunny,
Download CCleaner, it does more than fix registry entries, it also cleans up clutter and erases internet history and more.

Disable unnecessary start-up processes, I never really gave this much thought, I will definitely give this a try.
Or what works for me, re-do your whole machine from scratch.
Peter,
That’s a bit extreme. I would rather try to solve the issue first.
I agree with you frank but i love it when i re do my pc,its fast again! Becoz as time pass and you install and uninstall programs, your pc intends to slow down.
Peter,
I format and new installation will always be faster, agree!
