The “Montauk Monster” washed up on a beach in Montauk, NY in July 2008, and has created an Internet sensation.

What is it? It looks like a sea creature of sorts or even a gargoyle.

Something really did wash up in Montauk, one sunny day, two weeks ago. More than four people saw it and one person photographed it. The surf was rough, flipping the thing, over and over, and over again. Four people from Montauk approached the monster and captured a picture that many have buzzed about across the internet.

“It looked like nothing I’d ever seen before,” said Ryan O’Shea, of Brooklyn. “It looked like it died angry.”

The result is lots of — ew — gross photos of a carcass that looks more domestic than exotic, a bloated dog, not the Hound from Hell.

It shows ears, a big swatch of fur and its proportions appear to be less distorted — making the head appear to be a suitable complement to the body.

This is not a dog or anything I have ever seen. I was raised on Long Island for more than 30 years and I have seen strange sea creatures, but they had names and this creature is something that needs to be studied.
