Many people who surf the web, download music, never even think of what goes on in a data center environment when they push and pull data to their communication devices. Many of us take for granted that when we request data from our computers, smartphones, or other communication devices, there’s a lot that goes on environmentally within a data center. Data centers are also referred to as web hosting facilities where many websites are stored. Amazingly clear infographics! :) I think that we do take these technologies for granted because of how fast we’re improving. With all the fast paced changes going on, we forget that it is more than just that and a lot are being sacrificed for our convenience.

Another strategy being used to reduce the environmental impact of server farms is called the ‘data furnace’. This involves using the heat produced by these racks of equipment for climate control, in a similar fashion to CHP (Combined Heat and Power) or cogeneration in heavy industry.
