Your company will not be so lucky to fill a position over the next 12 months as the big guns are scooping up the best talent at most Universities. Big pay may not be the only thing that lures these future programmers, it may come down to the brand as well.
With the recent downturn in tech sectors and a move toward off-shoring has put many companies in a downward spiral in obtaining talent. Many companies are recruiting globally to hopefully encourage those programmers that are located in Russia and India to jump ship and come to America.
In fact, many companies have decided to create satellite offices in the countries that are rich in programmers.
It’s time for our high schools to offer programming to students to increase the pool for this skill category that is in high demand. We rely on computers for a lot of stuff, in fact, it has become a necessity and no longer a luxury. The next government needs to fund our education system to offer programming into the curriculum.
The future is now for the next generation of computer scientists!
Programing ISN’T offered in high schools? Where? I took 4 sememsters of computer programming in high school and I graduated WAY back in 1988. Our schools here all have programming, plus, the vo-tech schools offer it, and public and charter school seniors can take unlimited free classes at the community college (in anything they want, including programming, and keep the college credits they earn).
Oops, I forgot to add that I think the real reason that most large company want Russian and Indian programmers is to save money. Americans command a higher salary. Thinking that it’s just too hard to hire here in the States isn’t true. Why are so many large call centers located in India now? Not because they can’t find enough people here at home to do the work, but because they save massive amounts of money by outsourcing to cheap labor.
