There’s an email purporting to be from Norton Antivirus, notifying users to renew and or update their current Norton Security software. The links in the email go to an affiliate web site that is sending out spam to customers who have never opted in to receiving notifications from the web site. In fact, I am not a customer of Symantec, the makers of Norton Security products.
It was easy to assume that this type of unethical marketing could be a classic phishing scam as it’s a common practice amongst cyber crooks to create lookalike web sites to phish information from visitors.
Symantec, the makers of Norton Security will not notify its customers to renew or update their security software via email. This is all done within the security software. You will receive a prompted when you are up for renewal.
My friend, who goes by (G7W) over at mywot.com provided the following statement;
There’s no Phishing involved, but I question the ethical approach used as an “affiliate”
Symantec should be notified and this affiliate should be booted from their “sales team.”
