Many of the newspaper companies are cutting jobs due to the downward spiral of newspaper sales. The internet may be the leading cause of this collapse, but there’s also another side of this story that needs to be exposed.
The truth is the newspaper companies shot their own foot by producing free content over the internet. Why buy the newspaper when you can visit any or most news sites to read the latest news? This industry could solve this problem, but they would all need to come together and that my friend is like pulling teeth.
If all the newspaper companies charged a small monthly fee to access the online addition of their newspaper, they would eliminate this problem and increase revenue. However, if not all companies implemented this, than it would not work as customers would look else where for those offering their online newspaper free.
Don’t blame the internet, blame the newspaper industry. If they only published news online they would be greener by eliminating the use of paper, machines and lower utility costs.

Local advertisers are definitely losing because of this, but there are other sources.
I don’t think very many would buy a subscription when there are so many free sources available for the news. Unless they offered something unique!
It’s going to be tough to compete and you’re right they need something compelling.
I don’t know I still subscribe to 3 papers, there is something about the media I enjoy, I also have numerous mag subscriptions, my mail man luvs me. Is it a dying media?
It’s a shame that this industry that helped spreading information to millions of people is now an old cow.
