There are many ways to win a popularity contest and MySpace isn’t one of them. It’s a site mostly made up of teenagers that are in a race against other peers on who has the most friends, and who is the coolest. It could lead to bigger issues like sharing too much information or too much of yourself by way of a photo to get attention from the opposite sex.
Other Cons in no particular order:
- Anyone can read your profile unless you lock it down
- Too many young people put too much personal information on their pages
- Stalkers/Perverts/Pedophiles roam these pages looking to lure easy victims
- Many teenagers use this site to vent which results in harassment issues
- There’s no way for MySpace to check your age so you can type in whatever
- Annoying spam from people you didn’t even know were on your friends list
- Losing touch with reality and current events
- MySpace set as your default page shows you don’t care about anything else
- Getting annoying chain letters
MySpace is an infestation of people who are looking for attention and could find themselves in danger of being in the wrong company. There are things you can do to break away from a bad habit and find other channels to explore.
5 ways to break the MySpace habit:
- Set your default browser to either Google or Yahoo news
- Remove your MySpace bookmark
- Delete your MySpace account. Go ahead, I know it’s hard
- Get a job so that you spend less time frying your brain
- Communicate in the English language and less in acronyms
I warned you!
Wonderful article to protect, support and help our teens.
Another idea is having a community computer in an open area in our home instead of a teens room.

You’re right on the money! Watch your teens browsing habits and monitor what and who they’re talking to.
:) Thanks Sunshine!
