The main purpose of a domain name “yourname.com” is to provide symbolic representations, i.e., recognizable names, to mostly numerically addressed Internet resources.
The challenge is to find the name you want and hope it’s not already registered. Unfortunately, there are so many domains that are registered especially the dot com variety as this is the most popular domain extension.
These domains are usually parked, this means they are not being used for a fully functional web site, instead they’re parked at the registrar company. This is known as Domain Squatting. A registrar is a company authorized to register Internet domain names. You will also find many domains that only include a splash page that provides away to purchase the domain.
What needs to change?
ICANN needs to create rules that specify what the holder of the domain name must follow in order to obtain registration. Some rules would imply the following;
- Domain names must be associated with an active web site
- Domain names must not be associated with a splash page or listed for sale
- Domain names can’t be sold on any site and only by authorized registrars
- Domain names must not be parked for more than 90 days
I strongly believe that these rules can make a difference, and will make more dot com names available for registration.
About ICANN: ICANN is the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers. They’re responsible for Internet Protocol (IP) address space allocation, protocol identifier assignment, generic (gTLD) and country code (ccTLD) Top Level Domain name system management, and root server system management functions.
Hey Frank, whatever happened to BlogTBT.com?
I took it down as I don’t have time to blog on both sites, but I may open it again for another project I have been thinking about.
If this happens it would be so great because many a times I wish to suggest some domain to a small business company but I end up finding that the domain is registered and if I go to see that to whom…all that I get is a blank page with some weird message! If ICANN imposes this, it would be very useful to have approprate names to needy ones!
It has to happen to eliminate the squatting.
I too strongly support your cause.
I appreciate that and hopefully some rules will change.
I am totally against these rules. The owner of the registered name is the sole person to make such decisions. He(she) took the financial burden to keep this name and he(she) should make any decisions based on the financial burden he carried. It is like you buy a house and because you do not live there, you cannot be the landlord. This is against our freedom. The second horrible thing is you let a registrar be your partner, is like assigning a real estate agent to make decisions for you( I am sure eventually, they will take the lion share from the transaction while the owner may get pennies), would anyone accept that. These ideas could be from the registrars, who some of them are doing horrible things to get their hands on good domain names (I had that experience). These ideas could be initiated cannot agree with our principle of freedom.
Not if they’re squatting for profit only.
Amen to this!! A simple set of rules, really, and common sense.
Judy,
I am glad you support this and hopefully someone will take notice.
