Love is in the air and cyber criminals are licking their own lips in hopes to steal personal information from users. Here’s information on what you need to know in order to keep your personal information from getting into the wrong hands.
Phishing scams are very popular during holidays and cyber criminals have no prejudice when it comes to Valentine’s Day. Scammers will send massive email campaigns in order to dupe victims into handing over personal information. For instance, you may get an email requesting you to confirm information for a recent order from fake online florist web sites in order to complete your delivery.
Florist Phishing Scams
If you click on links within any of these emails and you enter personal information into an online form, you have just handed over your personal information directly to the scammer. It is important that if you’ve made a purchase with an online florist web site, you should never re-enter your personal information to confirm your purchase for delivery. You should always call the company directly to verify the information in the email. If you didn’t make any purchase you should delete the email immediately.
E-card Phishing Scams
The most popular holiday scams are E-cards. If you open an e-card you receive unexpectedly, you could put your computer at risk for vulnerabilities such as malware. Clicking on the links in an email could execute the installation of a Trojan on your computer.
Users should be careful when downloading any programs prompted by an email in order to view content. If you are unaware of the sender, delete the email immediately.
You should also be careful of links shared on social networks. These links could lead you to malicious and fraudulent web sites trying to pilfer your money.
