This initiative is already operating in the US in Los Angeles, where their Unified School District has stated each of the students will have now access to a 32GB 4th generation Apple Ipad. According to research, the program will initially be rolled out to 47 campuses in a deal worth $30 million. The school board has committed to spend millions of dollars providing a district consisting of 640,000 students at 1,087 schools with Apple iPads exclusively. Speaking of their decision to collaborate solely with Apple, Jaime Aquino, Deputy Superintendent of Instruction, stated;

“The Board voted unanimously for Apple because iPad rated the best in quality, was the least expensive option and received the highest scoring by the review panel that included students and teachers”

Moreover, Apple senior VP Phillip Schiller stated;

“Education is in Apple’s DNA and we’re thrilled to work with Los Angeles Unified public schools on this major initiative as they plan to roll out iPads to every student across 47 campuses this fall,”

“Schools around the world have embraced the engaging and interactive quality of iPad with nearly 10 million iPads already in schools today.”

This LA initiative has drawn attention for the potential of iPads in schools. Already there exists a range of free educational apps available from the Apple Store, such as Mental Maths from Maths Doctor, which schools are beginning to incorporate into their current syllabus. This resource of free and available educational software is extremely enticing for schools which annually spend extortionate fees on new textbooks and learning equipment.

Audio visual tools – The iPad has easy access to cameras, video and video recorder which can be used across apps in classrooms to offer an interactive learning experience.

There is no longer the hassle of long loading times associated with desktops and laptops, moreover there is no need for large IT classrooms full of out of date, overheated hardware.

Schools are no longer forced to use the same expensive textbook for years as now they can download update textbooks from Apple. Student no longer need to carry around a wealth of heavy paper books and are able to annotate, highlight and look up definitions using these new apps.
